Entry Requirement:  Priority will be given to students who have taken Geography at Level 2 NCEA and/or Level 1 NCEA.  We recommend students have at least 12 credits in Level 2 English.  Other students can be taken into the course with HOD approval.

Course Outline:   

  1. Environmental and planning issues in New Zealand where they will apply geographic knowledge and understanding to actual problems, needs or issues affecting people and the natural environment.  This will include a research topic of their own choice about a local planning issue and a global study of a world-wide issue.
  2. Study of the Aka Aka - Otaua Basin close to the mouth of the Waikato river including a field trip
  3. Changes in Tourism.  Work is assessed using Achievement standards, both during .the year and in the external exams.  This course is useful if you are interested in people's impact on the environment and planning and develops your writing and research skills for university and polytechnic.

Cost:  $100.00 (approximately) for field trips and
          $10.00 for print resources

Days out of school:  Three

Where does it lead?  Tertiary study at both university and polytechnics.  Students considering courses in geography, environmental geography, planning and management would find this subject an excellent basis for study.  It gives students excellent skills in analysis, research and an understanding of the environment and our interactions with this.
