General Information

Careers advice is available from a trained counsellor.  STAR courses are arranged for senior students; STAR tasters for juniors.

Exchange Programme:  The school has established links with schools in other countries.  A number of students have the opportunity to spend time in overseas schools each year.  In return, Hamilton Girl' High School is host to students from these schools.  A range of Exchange organisations such as AFS, Rotary, ASSE, NZIIU provide further opportunities for interested students to experience life in other countries, or to host overseas students.

Health Clinic:  The school employs a qualified nurse to be at the school from 9.30am to 2.30pm each day.  She looks after those who are taken ill or injured at school.  If the Nurse/First Aid person considers that a student should return home, she contacts parents to ask them to collect their daughter.  If this is impossible, she will arrange a taxi at the parents' expense.  Students who are obviously sick should not come to school.  A doctor holds a free clinic at school one afternoon each week.

House System:  The school is organised into five houses. They are: Campbell (orange), Edgecumbe (blue), Heads (red), Macdiarmid (green) and Wilson (yellow).  More information.

Identification (ID) Card:  The Board of Trustees issues a personal ID card to each student early in Term 1.

International Students:  Hamilton Girls' High School is a member of the International Student Programme of Hamilton and welcomes students who qualify for enrolment under this scheme.  International students make a valuable cultural contribution to the school and the Hamilton community and their presence and friendship broadens the perspective of our students.

Newsletters are posted home or accessed via our website regularly.

Old Girls' Association provides a continuing link between past and present.  The Association is very supportive of the school.

Parent Conversations are held once a year in May.  In term 1 there is an opportunity for new parents to meet informally with their daughters' teachers. Meeting dates are in the student diary and school newsletters.

Student Diary:  The Board of Trustees issues a student diary to each student twice a year.  It contains details of school events, rules and regulations.

Student government:  All fifth year students are considered to be student leaders.  Each year elections are held for a Head Girl, Deputy Head Girls (x 2), President and Deputy President of Student Council, President and Deputy President of Ka Awatea, Sports Captain and Deputy Sports Captain, Arts Captain and Deputy Arts Captain, Academic Captain and Deputy Academic Captain, Student Representative on the Board of Trustees and House Captains.  These students provide leadership and are positive role models for others.  The Student Council is a student voice in school matters and is involved in raising money for a number of ventures which benefit all students.  Popular events managed by the council are school socials, which are held in conjunction with Boys' High, and mufti days. Ka Awatea, (Maori Student Council) deals with issues and events which involve Maori students such as Kapa Haka, Nga Manu Korero, Te Wiki o Te Reo Maori. The Sports Council assists with Athletic and Swimming sports and the school Cross Country competition.

Cellphones:  The use of cellphones in class is prohibited unless the teacher gives permission for them to be used.

Whanau Support Group:  This is open to the parents and whanau of all Maori students.  Meeting dates are in the school calendar.  The school kaumatua is Mr John Ahu. Sadly our kuia, Mrs Mamaarangi Kaihau, passed away in October,2011.
