Entry Requirement:  Minimum 8 Level One English Credits OR HOD approval

Course Outline:  This is a fascinating and relevant course that demonstrates how laws affect almost every aspect of people’s daily lives.  Students will develop an awareness of their legal obligations and the variety of ways that they are affected by the law.  They learn how New Zealand laws are made, as well as how, and why, they change over time.  Students will investigate several different branches of the law, including New Zealand’s justice system, criminal and civil law, youth law, family law, disputes resolution, and laws that affect secondary school students.  Students will visit the Hamilton Courthouse and host several interesting guest speakers throughout the year.  This course enables students to develop the following essential skills: communication skills, numeracy skills, information skills, problem-solving skills, self-management and competitive skills, social and co-operative skills, work and study skills, attitudes and values.
 
This is a practical and investigative subject with an emphasis on individual and group research, and on the student’s ability to communicate with outside agencies.

Days out of school:  One and a half-days including a visit to Hamilton Courthouse
