Course Outline: To enter this course you must have level 8 credits in Level 2 English or History. For standard 3.1 we will examine one of the greatest pieces of literature ever written, The Aeneid of Virgil. It is an epic originally written in Latin. In the final years of the BC era Rome had been through torment. Civil war had broken the Roman republic. One man now reigned, the first emperor, Augustus. Augustus needed a poem to herald in the new era and Virgil rose to the challenge. He looked back to the tales of Homer (the fall of Troy and the journey of Odysseus) and found a hero, whom destiny would make the founder of the Roman people. His name was Aeneas. Aeneas stands as eyewitness as Troy burns. He escapes to meet gods, monsters and love (which he deserts). It is often seen as the perfect epic. For Standard 3.2 we will study the earliest development of sophisticated art. Greek vases were not just vessels. They were the canvas of Ancient Greece. It was a canvas that enabled the Greeks to tell the tales of Homer in a wholly new way. For 3.3 we will investigate Roman Religion including sacrifice, festivals and also the worship of the Roman deities. For 3.4 you will return to Roman Religion. This Achievement standard is an internal and will be based on the Roman deities. Cost: $10.00 Days out of school: None Where does it lead? University Study |
