Course Outline:   This subject is for those who enjoyed Social Studies in Years 9 or 10 and are interested in learning more about society, different cultures and ways to solve social problems. You learn skills of research, ways to understand different values of people and keep up to date on current issues in our society.  You will do an individual research about changes in New Zealand society and problem solve an issue for our society. Some of the topics we study include:

  • the world-wide problem of landmines and how organizations are trying to limit their effects.
  • how people today and in the past have controlled mokomokai (preserved Maori heads)
  • the changes in retail in New Zealand since the 1950's
  • womens participation in the workforce since the 1950's

The course helps develop research and writing skills and encourages the use of the internet for information gathering. You need to be open to studying a range of different ideas and learning ways of understanding the world. The course includes both internal and end of year assessments.

Where does this lead?  There are courses at both Levels 2 and 3 Social Studies (which is an approved course for University Entrance). It is good for any people related fields (eg law, health, education, management, politics and research).
