Entry Requirement:  None.  This course will be a prerequisite for Level 3 Early Childhood Education.

Course Outline:  This is an interactive life skills course designed to introduce students to childcareand early childhood education.  Students work through a range of modules to gain or build skills and knowledge necessary to effectively care for children and to develop an understanding of the complexity of the role of an early childhood teacher. Topics covered include preparation of children's meals, understanding children's needs, providing age appropriate play resources for young children, child development and early childhood education.  Opportunities are given for students to learn through hands-on practical situations during fieldwork.  Students who are seriously considering a career in Early Childhood Education are encouraged to apply for the Gateway Programme which will provide work experience one day per week in a preschool.
