Entry Requirement:  Have completed Year 12 Social Studies or have at least 12 credits in any ONE of the following NCEA subjects: Social Studies, Geography, History, Economics, English, Media Studies or Classics.

Course Outline:   This subject follows on from Level 2 Social Studies, but is available for any one who enjoyed Social Studies in Years 9 or 10 and has a keen interest in society, cultures and the issues we face. You learn in-depth skills of research and analysis, ways to understand, in depth, different values of people and seek solutions for issues and problems in our society.  One major piece of work is an independent individual research about the impact of a change in law in our society, eg the lowering of the age of drinking.  You will be expected to use the internet, interview and survey people.  The course includes both internal and end of year assessments. If you wonder about your rights and responsibilities and what you can do to ensure the rights of others, or you have a keen interest in social issues, this is the course for you.

Cost:  $25.00 for a fieldtrip and $12.00 for print resources.

Where does it lead?  There are courses at University and Polytechnics that follow on from this course.  It can lead to degrees in the Social Sciences, Humanities or Management, particularly courses in sociology, social work, history, planning, management, nursing and politics and law.  Anything that involves insight into cultures and behaviours would be enhanced by this course.
