Maggie Dent Visit 2009

Some comments from Maggie’s workshops with
Students and Staff:

Teachers:
I found the morning very interesting and informative.  I have been teaching for many years but I am still
learning and today I learnt some very useful tools to use with young people.
Lots of seeds sown, lots of laughs.
I found today a breath of fresh air.  We, as teachers, should never forget what it was like as an adolescent.

Year 13 Students:
Lovely! Very informative and interesting. Would love for my parents to get tips from you!!
Today was cool. I learnt a lot about myself and why I am the way I am.
This day has made me learn to see life optimistically and that I could make a difference in someone’s life
and also for myself

Year 12 Students:
It was a refreshing experience to be spoken to by someone so natural and honest who understands.  Everything Maggie Dent
said struck a chord within me.  It was cool.
I thought that today’s workshop was very interesting and I was really fascinated by the story of the young girl named Zarah.
I took a lot out of this workshop and I recommend it to all adolescents.
Very enlightening experience, and taught me a  lot about myself and how I live my life.  Thank you.
Thank you because now I think I should relish every moment that I enjoy and try to succumb into doing or trying out
anything that I have never thought of trying out before.  I am going to prove that I AM not a shallow person.
I CAN do it and I WILL do it!
Today meant a great lot for me.  It answered a lot of questions and gave me a better look inside my brain,
also I learnt what I can do to cope with problems and not make decisions quickly but take time to think about a situation
and choose what is best for me.
I believe today was an extraordinary experience that taught us a lot about ourselves and the reasons
behind our feelings.
This workshop was very inspirational, as the stories of those who were affected by unfortunate events
and significant ones as well truly inspired me, to make my mark on this world.  And of course, the lady was crack up!

Year 11 Students:

Everything Maggie has said is totally true. It’s a real eye opener. I think this should be something that every teenagers in
New Zealand should have the right to see. To experience the work Maggie has done for these kids and how other teenagers
can follow in her work & how to act & react to hard situations that us teenagers think we will never get though. You’re an inspiration Maggie keep it up.
I would like to thank Mrs Maggie Dent for re-igniting the spark of hope and happiness within me. I know I am capable,
I will get through my ups and downs and I can achieve my goals.
It made me realise that my upbringing doesn’t have to determine my future.
Thank you Maggie your stories of the amazing people you have met were inspirational. and opened my eyes to the power of positive thinking you made my birthday even though its tomorrow. You showed me there is hope even if I don’t pass maths or English but I will go and visualise passion so I’ll be sweet.
Thank you so much for today Maggie! You really know your stuff and are good at putting all my friends and I into groups. Do not stop what you are doing here! It helps so much!
Inspired Me! Thank You! Means a lot. And very happy that you’ve helped so much people, I want to do the same and help give smiles.
Maggie’s inspirational words are definitely some I will take with me for the rest of my life. Thank you.

Year 10 Students:

Thanks for the inspiration. For me life hasn’t been as easy but now that I’ve heard about your world, with your wisdom that I’ve taken on board.
I feel that life will just be another trial, negatives can be positives.  It’s just up to you, how you want to do it!! Thank you.
You are my inspiration.  Life hasn’t been easy but I’ve found my own LIGHTHOUSE.
Maggie Dent made me feel amazing, alive.  She taught me a lot about the ways of how to deal with stress and made me feel
peaceful when in the five minute thinking time.  She is a strong person and has influenced on me a lot.
Today made me realise that everyone goes through ‘a bumpy ride’ in their life, some more severe or complicated
than others, but there is always a lighthouse to guide you through it and bring you safely home.
The course was very influential and changed my views and attitudes towards EVERYTHING
I felt that I have dreams that I want to come true I want to make my life wonderful and other people’s wonderful,
I’m going to make a book about my dreams.
I think that most of the stuff I do at home e.g. lack of sleep, low concentration etc are very normal and I will inform my parents.
I think that the talk today with Maggie Dent was an eye opener and I feel like I am looking at the world through
some one else's eyes and feel relief that some one understands me as a teenager and hope I will be able to relate to my mum more.  Thanks Maggie.

Year 9 Students:

I thought that this has helped me to see that the smallest acts of kindness can make a big difference.
And that I’m not the only one going through this.
I thought Maggie was awesome and really gets kids (teenagers.)  It was great listing to Maggie (not boring.)
I’ve taken everything you said in you’ve been a great help.  Thank you very much Maggie.
I fell like if anyone else’s life could be changed then why not mine.  I am looking forward for each day to come.
Now I know there is a reason I’m in this world.
Today I've learnt so much.  I believe everyone has a purpose, and that the way we treat others changes everyone’s lives.
You are a very inspirational person.  I wish you the best.
Today I felt that I was being myself in a way I have never felt before.  It helped me learn to take off the bad mask and put on the good ones.
