Hamilton Girls’ High School is well known for its vibrant and dynamic Drama Department which offers exciting and challenging academic programmes and a full and varied selection of Extra Curricular activities.Drama can be taken as a half year Option Subject in Year 9 and as a full Year Option Subject in Years 10 to 13. NCEA Levels 1, 2 and 3 Drama are offered and a Scholarship programme prepares students for Scholarship Drama examinations. As the culmination of their learning, each Drama Option class performs a play in the evening for parents and Whanau in our Black Box Theatre, complete with full set, costumes, props, music, hair and makeup.
Every year we provide opportunities which students must audition for, and those which are open to whoever wants to participate, providing the chance for gifted performers to extend and develop their talents, and opportunities for participation for all.
The Drama Department is staffed by a highly qualified group of professionals who are at the forefront of the latest curriculum developments and have a proven track record of producing high quality Drama and Dance performances and events.
Our facilities include the Black Box Theatre, Dance Studio, Props and Scenery construction tunnel, large Wardrobe and Wardrobe Workroom. Many of our performances and events are staged in Nga Puawaitanga and we have active links with the Hamilton Theatre Community.
Drama is a sought after subject for those embarking on a wide range of careers in the Arts such as Theatre, Film and television, Media and Communication, Event and Arts Management. In addition, it is an asset for any socially oriented career that relies on sensitivity towards others and advanced communication skills, such as teaching, law, nursing and medicine, the Police force, Psychology etc.
