As you will be aware measles is circulating in New Zealand, particularly in the Auckland region – so close to home! Measles is a highly infectious viral illness and is very easily spread. It is important to be vigilant and prepare for the likelihood that we may start to see measles cases in the Waikato area. The Waikato DHB newsroom has released the following advice for school Principals/Service providers:
The most important key message is that immunisation is the best way to protect against getting measles and limiting outbreaks. Two doses of the MMR vaccine will give 99% protection against measles. Please take the time now to check your student immunisation register and make sure it is up to date. Also check the immunisation status of all staff born after 01-01-1969, as this age group may not be immunised for measles.
