Badminton

Badminton at Hamilton Girls’ High School caters for all girls and levels.  

Training and game play on Monday is open to all and from these sessions girls are selected to compete in the Waikato Secondary Schools competition if they wish to play at this level.

Hockey

Hockey has had a chequered history at Hamilton Girls’ High School. A popular sport from the schools early years, in 1925 it was then deemed an unsuitable sport for girls. It was reinstated in 1951 and since then it has returned to its very popular beginnings and is one of our largest winter sporting codes. The aim of the Hockey programme is to develop each player and provide them with the skills to ensure they can participate at the best of their ability and feel success.

Netball

Netball has always been a hugely popular winter sporting code and each year it attracts over 300 girls. The netball programme aims to provide all girls with the opportunity to participate at a level which they wish to participate. Our high performance programme is well-resourced with coaches who have a wealth of expertise and experience.

Basketball 5x5

Basketball has a long and proud tradition at Hamilton Girls' High School with the first competitive game for girls dating back to 1920 when it was the predominant winter sport.  In 2012 we were the New Zealand Secondary Schools AA Premier Champions and our coaching and training programmes are focused on development and regaining this title.

Inline Hockey

Inline Hockey is a fun and exciting game for students of all years and abilities. HGHS has seen a growth in the number of students wanting to play over the last 2 years. Skates and safety gear are supplied for use.

Rugby

A structured coaching environment provides opportunities for all abilities and students of any age and level are able to participate.  We pride ourselves on a culture where our girls are driven to succeed in rugby, training, healthy lifestyles, school and life.  In 2014 HGHS were crowned the NZSS Rugby Champions and the WSS Rugby Champions.

Football

Hamilton Girls’ High School has a strong background in girls Football, offering six Football teams at various grades. Competing in the Waikato Knockout Cup, five aside tournaments, and various other competitions. The 1st XI compete in the Division 1 National Secondary Schools Football tournament.

Lacrosse

Lacrosse is one of New Zealand’s fastest growing sports.  Lacrosse is a fast-paced team sport that involves a fist-sized hard rubber ball that is thrown, caught, and shot using lacrosse sticks.  Lacrosse sticks are about a metre long and consist of a shaft (usually metal) and a plastic head that is strung with mesh.   Players carry and pass the ball in order to score goals.  We have a dedicated team of girls committed to the growth of the sport who have achieved at regional and national level.

Snowsports

Snow Sports is an exciting sport that encompasses adaptive snowsports, alpine ski racing, cross country skiing, fee skiing and snowboarding. We have a number of staff who are extremely passionate about these sports and Hamilton Girls’ High School enters a team in the Waikato Secondary Schools and North Island Secondary Schools Ski and Snowboard Championships each year.

Softball

Softball had its beginnings at Hamilton Girls’ High School in 1977 and it is a sport that provides excellent pathways for success at both a regional and national level. Played in terms 1 and 4 the school competes in the local Saturday league and also prepares for the National Senior and Junior Tournaments held towards the end of Terms 1 and 4 respectively.
