2021

Kapa Haka

Te Maurea Whiritoi placed third at the Tainui Secondary Schools Kapa Haka competition, gaining national qualification for 2022

Manu Kōrero

Arihia Gage placed third in the Junior Māori section at the Regional Ngā Manu Kōrero Speech Competition 

Drama

At the Regional Sheilah Winn competition, Eden Peters won Best Student Directed Scene.

Eden then competed at the Shakespeare Globe Centre NZ National University of Otago Sheilah Winn Shakespeare Festival 2021and was awarded Outstanding Performance in a Supporting Role Award – Margaret, Much Ado About Nothing.

On that performance Eden was then selected for the National Youth Shakespeare Company which she attended in the October holidays and performed at Parliament.

She was also chosen for the World Youth Shakespeare Company which she will attend in London in July 2022.  Here she will be directed by top directors and will perform in a Shakespeare production onstage at the Globe Theatre, London.

Music

HGHS’ Mana Wahine received a Highly Commended at the Regional Big Sing competition with the choir achieving 4th overall

At the Young Singers in Harmony Regional Competition, the HGHS Barbershop Chorus achieved 2nd, and the Quartets 1st and 3rd

Visual Art

Qazzandrav Gines competed in the Strange Art Competition and won with her digital painting “Camera Girl”. The piece will be the cover art for the 2021 Play It Strange Lion Foundation Songwriting Competition album

Sara Arain placed 2nd and Emma James placed 3rd at the Swallow Gallery Hamilton Art Competition for Secondary Schools – The Artful Four: 40 Shots. Emma James also received the Volunteers Choice Award and Chloe Sutherland received the people’s choice award. These placings secured Top School for HGHS.

Dance

Sarah King and her Dance School Hip Hop Crew, X-Hale, competed in the online the international –  All Generation World Dance Championships – and placed third

Debating

Rebecca Yuan competed in the Waikato Regional Debating Competition and was selected for the 2021 development squad

At the Waikato 48 Hour Film Competition, HGHS were awarded the Best Disqualified Film (due to late submission – Rebecca Yuan, Chloe Dangawen, Te Aniwaniwa Leefe, Morgan Van Loggenberg, Tayneisha Cooper, Jyazmine Alcartado and Kylah Tane-Edwards), and Best High School Production (Isabella Shanks, Jovi Taylor, Laura Munro, Natasha Bainbridge, Poppy Peate, Summa Dixon)
